In a recent interview with Windows Central last month (via Comic Book), Xbox boss Phil Spencer commented that a major overhaul of the achievements system is underway. Spencer didn’t provide any information on when this could be expected or what it would consist of.
On the most recent episode of the Xbox Era podcast, insider Shpeshal Nick stated that he’s heard the company is “almost done” with the achievements overhaul, and that it’s expected to launch in 2024. This wouldn’t be too surprising, given Spencer’s recent comments, but it remains to be seen how much things will change.
As with any rumor, readers are advised to take this with a grain of salt until an official announcement. Shpeshal Nick has proven to be a reliable source in the past, but plans are constantly changing in the video game industry. Something that seems “almost done” now may end up being delayed.
Fans have been hopeful for changes to the Xbox achievements system for quite some time, including the creation of an equivalent to PlayStation’s platinum trophies. It remains to be seen whether this will be part of the redesign, or if Microsoft has something else in mind.
